Trip Introduction.

The 6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Marangu Route is one of the most popular ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu offers a gradual approach through rainforest, moorland, and alpine landscapes before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

This itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day, giving you more time to adjust to the altitude and improve your chances of reaching the summit successfully. Gleam Horizon Safari provides experienced mountain guides, comfortable mountain huts, meals, and organized support throughout the climb.

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from your accommodation to Marangu Gate. After registration and park formalities, start hiking through the lush rainforest.

The trail is surrounded by tall trees, tropical vegetation, and the sounds of forest birds. As you gain altitude, the landscape gradually changes and the forest becomes less dense.

Continue to Mandara Hut, where you will have dinner and rest for the night.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

After breakfast, leave the rainforest and continue toward the moorland zone. The trail opens into wider landscapes with views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s volcanic surroundings.

As you hike higher, you may see giant lobelias and other high-altitude vegetation. On clear days, there may also be views toward Mawenzi Peak.

Continue to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night and prepare for the next stage of the climb.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. Instead of moving to a higher sleeping altitude, you will take a shorter hike around the Horombo area.

Your guide may lead you toward higher ground around Mawenzi Ridge before returning to Horombo Hut. This climb helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude while allowing you to enjoy spectacular mountain scenery.

Spend the afternoon resting, drinking plenty of water, and preparing for the higher sections of Kilimanjaro.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 5–7 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

After breakfast, continue toward Kibo Hut. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the high alpine desert zone.

The trail crosses the Saddle, a broad area between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The landscape becomes rocky and open, with fewer plants and very little shelter from the elements.

Arrive at Kibo Hut and settle in for the evening. Have an early dinner and rest as much as possible because the summit attempt begins during the night.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Wake up around midnight and begin the summit attempt. This is the most demanding section of the climb, requiring slow and steady progress.

Hike through the darkness toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point before proceeding to Uhuru Peak.

At approximately 5,895 meters above sea level, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa. Take time to celebrate your achievement, enjoy the spectacular surroundings, and take photographs before beginning the descent.

Descend toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 20 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6: Horombo Hut-Marangu Gate-Arusha

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones.

As you descend, the vegetation becomes greener and the air becomes warmer. Continue toward Marangu Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate.

Meet your vehicle and transfer back to Arusha for a well-earned rest.

Your 6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Marangu Route ends with an unforgettable achievement at the roof of Africa.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch

Best Time for the Marangu Route

The Marangu Route can be climbed throughout the year, although the drier months generally offer better trekking conditions. The main recommended periods are January to March and June to October.

Weather conditions can change quickly on Kilimanjaro. Therefore, proper preparation, suitable clothing, and following your guide’s instructions are important throughout the climb.

Why Choose the Marangu Route?

The Marangu Route is particularly attractive to climbers who prefer hut accommodation rather than camping. The trail also has a relatively gradual profile on several sections, although the summit day remains physically demanding.

The six-day itinerary adds an acclimatization day at Horombo, allowing more time to adjust to altitude before progressing toward Kibo and the summit.
